One a Day - September 29th

This collage is made from an envelope for a mail-order sewing pattern, it dates to the 1940s. I got it in a box of misc junk at an auction in Faribault, MN. There were several envelopes with patterns in them: some printed, some not. Interesting to see an unprinted pattern.

One a Day - September 28th

Yesterday's theme was "keep it simple." The woman is from a vintage zipper package, and the background is a paint chip from Home Depot.

One (or more) a Day - September 27th

I have at least four vintage dictionaries, and have been clipping dictionary pictures for several years...I think this is only the first or second that I've actually used.

The 100th Collage - September 25th

This is the 100th collage I've done since starting this daily art thing on July 24th...and they all fit into a shoebox with room to spare...

GPP Street Team Challenge Number 44

"In a Scrape" -- the challenge is to layer a journal page with paint by scraping over and over.  See more here.
I started with Gesso and Princess Pink.
Blue, another pink, and more pink...voila! It just happens to match some paper beads I had rolled a few months back (upper right).

PS: Go to the main page of the blog to see my version of a "Collage a Day," inspired by the July/August Somerset Studio article of the same name. I've done over 60 collages since July!

Masters: Collage: Major Works by Leading Artists

This book is by Randel Plowman, the same artist who inspired me to create a collage a day.

We have needed a fine art book of collage for a long time. It showcases some of my favorite artists, including Lynne Perrella and Jonathan Talbot, plus many others whose work I've not seen before.

TEDROW Step Away From the Pink!- 9/23

And I heard this loud, booming voice in my head: TEDROW, STEP AWAY FROM THE PINK!

I tried the orientation of the first one a couple of ways - with the circle on top, then on bottom. I decided that I liked it on the bottom (don't let your mind go there), it looked kind of like a pendulum.  Note the backwards text. I purposely went for the da Vinci effect.  Not really, I just forgot to print it out as as mirror image.

While I was waiting for the above transfer to dry, I picked up my bamboo stamp and randomly stamped it on a piece of vintage book paper. I thought it looked really cool so I made a collage just so I could use it. And of course, lately it's been all about butterflies. By the way, I might show some of these in November, anyone have any ideas about mounting/showing them?  I'm trying to avoid matting them, someone suggested mounting them with raw edges to a canvas in a grid of four each.

Hey, I am coming up on my 100th collage! Maybe I'll have a blog party...maybe leave a comment and I'll have a drawing for one of the collages.  It's a thought.

Kitten Formerly Known As Daisy Watches Letterman

I don't know why I think that a kitten watching television is so freakin funny. Here are a few shots of my unnamed boy-kitty watching David Letterman.
Hey, Letterman's on!
Wow!  Dancing Llamas!
Stop talking and bring on Shakira.

One (or more) a Day - September 22nd

Some days things don't come out as I've hoped, but I still think this is somewhat interesting:

One or Three a Day - September 19th

Two more butterflies and a woman. Yet another vintage woman, you're thinking, but look at her closely.  She's wearing *make-up*, very unusual for that time. And she's not wearing it with a sultry or "come hither" attitude, in fact she looks fairly defiant. Anyway, this is the first time I"ve used her in a collage, and I'm sure she'll show up in one again.

September 19th, 2010: The background of this is some sheet music that came from my mother's house. My piano teacher had written in the margin things like "difficult", and "high fingers," and some other stuff I can't make out.

One or Three a Day - September 18th

For the GPP Street Team Challenge, scroll down.

Tonight I did three collages.  I did the first two as I've done a few, similar backgrounds and color palettes. It doesn't take much more time to make two, as I wait for one to dry I work on the other, and so on.

So tonight I was going to do something different, maybe with some stitching, and went to look through my stash of backgrounds/fabric paper for inspiration. I ran across the background in the darker piece, which is actually a scan and enlargement of another background I did on a canvas.  It's enlarged to about twice its original size. I saw that and took it back to my table, and put it next to the butterfly in the piece. A happy accident - as you can see, these first two collages are done in the spirit of camouflage.

In the spirit of the Fashion Train Wreck:  sometimes I just don't need to take myself so darn seriously. When I found the purple cupcake grosgrain ribbon, I knew my work was complete.
